TOURNAMENT WRAP UPS

PGA Tour - Silver Platter

Matt Krohn - USA Today Sports

Sometimes it's hard to call a spade a spade, but not in this case. Scott Piercy (-13, T4) pulled a classic choke-job on Sunday as he went +7 over his last eleven holes to hand over the 3M Open to Tony Finau (-17, 1st). This isn't taking anything away from Finau. To win on Tour you have to put together 4 straight days of unbelievable golf. Finau did that, with a final round 67. But Piercy basically sh*t his pants. It's just another reminder of the pressure that looms around leaders on Sunday on the PGA Tour.

Battling a blister on his right foot, the final straw for Piercy came on the 14th hole where it took him two shots to get out of the fairway bunker, the second of which landed in the water. He made triple-bogey 7 and sealed his fate. Not to put salt in the blister but Scott lost himself just over $1 million with his round Sunday.

This is Finau's third career victory. One of the most consistent players over the past few years, Finau hasn't ranked worse than 24th in OWGR since 2018. Tony's come-from-behind victory earned him $1.3 mill and bumped him from 30th to 17th in the FedEx Cup Standings.

Sungjae Im and Emiliano Grillo both finished at -14 and tied for second. James Hahn posted the low round of the day, a six-under 65, and played himself into an extra $200k as he jumped from T16 to T4. Hereā€™s the guys that finished in the top-5 this week at TPC Twin Cities:

LPGA - Bit of Luck in France

Brooke Henderson birdied the 18th hole to win by one and take home the Evian Championship in France for her second career major title. After her tee shot on 18 hit off the trees left and bounced back into play, she took advantage of the break and sunk an 8-foot birdie to seal it. Henderson took home $1 mill for the victory.

Champions Tour - Rain and Guinness

Birdie on 18 seemed to be the trend this weekend as Darren Clarke birdied 18 at the Senior Open to beat Padraig Harrington by one. High on the list of people we'd like to get drunk with, Clarke fought off a final round 67 from Harrington to card his first Champions major victory.

Korn Ferry Tour - Record, Shmecord

David Kocker posted a tournament record of -28 to win the Price Cutter Charity Championship by six shots. The victory gets him within striking distance of the top-25 regular season standings. Top 25 Korn Ferry tour players are guaranteed a PGA Tour card for next season.

3M SHAG BAG

  • This week Finau did decently well hitting greens. Finau hit 85% Greens in Regulation.

  • If you haven't heard of Chris Gotterup, you likely will be hearing more of him soon. Chris averaged 328 yards off the tee this week, which was the longest in the field by over 5 yards.

  • Finau finished the week first in Strokes Gained Tee-to-Green and first in Scrambling. Makes sense considering he holed that 30 footer from the rough with the toe of his putter.

  • Before Sunday, Scott Piercy was playing lights out. For the week Piercy one-putted 50% of the time, leading the field and beating the tour average of 36%.

  • Finau's wife and 5 kids followed along for the whole round on Sunday and were there to congratulate and celebrate after his round. You love to see it.

We'll take all we can get

Joe LaCava, Tiger's caddie, spoke this week about what we might see from Tiger before the 2023 Masters. "Iā€™m still hoping heā€™ll play three, maybe four tournaments before the Masters," LaCava said in an interview with Dan Patrick. These tournaments would likely include the Hero World Challenge in December, The PNC Championship with his son Charlie later that month, The Genesis Invitational in February, and possibly The Players Championship in March. If we could have it our way Tiger would play every week and win every week, but this isn't 2000. Like being dumped by my first love, I don't like this new reality but I'm learning to live with it.

After Hideki Matsuyama's WD this week from the 3M, rumors picked up on when, not if, he makes the move to LIV. The timing of Hideki's jump could influence the stack of cash he gets. For example, if he leaves now he won't have to financially compete with other big names like he would at the conclusion of the Tour's season. Some are speculating anywhere from $200 million to $400 million!!! for him to jump. This alone speaks to Hideki's global market and would be another serious problem for the PGA Tour.

To answer the elephant in the room, we will jump for around fifty-three dollars and some pre-rolleds.

  • Wanna see the perfect swing? Check out Nelly Korda's pure move from this week's Evian Championship.

  • At 58 years young, Paul Goydos made the cut this week at the 3M. He finished T58th and beat Jason Day, Camilo Villegas and Kevin Chappell (among others).

  • If you want to feel like dump about your 78 at the local muni, watch Bubba try and go super low and a muni in Arizona.

  • Darren Clarke is just the fourth person to win both the Open Championship and the Senior Open Championship. That's worthy of a few dozen beers if you ask me.

  • Someone plugged a ball into the side of the cup...for a hole in one?Ā Hard to tell if this one counts or not. Wouldn't want it to be mine.
